CHAPTER 8
optimal puppy nutrition
People come to me with all kinds of dog problems, usually health problems that no standard allopathic vet can acceptably solve. I always have the same three questions for them: What are you feeding? Have you antidoted the vaccination side-effects? And are you using a holistic veterinarian? Food is the first and foremost way to solve most pet problems. The other two questions are discussed in the next chapter. The old adage “you are what you eat” is as applicable to pets as to people. People learning to be aware of their own diets and what they feed their children are also learning to apply this knowledge to feeding their pets. To have a healthy dog or puppy this is the place to start.
Human old age is plagued with a variety of ills. Heart dis-ease or cancer kill about two thirds of all people in the West. These dis-eases were barely known a hundred years ago. People’s life expectancy is not increasing. It is probably decreasing, and our quality of life is certainly declining. Dogs are experiencing the same decline and the same dis-eases. Cancer and heart dis-ease were unknown in dogs fifty years ago. The life expectancy of working sheep dogs thirty or forty years ago was about twenty-five years. Today most dogs are old by ten and almost all are dead by fifteen. The blame for this decline may be placed on the poor quality of the food we feed ourselves and our animals, along with the chemicalization of food and medical treatment. Our planet’s increasing levels of air, water, and soil pollution, soil and mineral depletion, contamination with toxic chemicals, preservatives and pesticides, growth stimulant hormones in plants and meat sources, and invasive and poisonous medical treatments are shortening all our lives.
